LHC Orders Non-Bailable Action Against Tree Cutters

Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court on Thursday emphasized that individuals accused of illegal tree cutting should not be granted bail, while hearing a case linked to smog and environmental pollution.

The court directed that a comprehensive tree protection policy report be submitted at the next hearing and ordered the Advocate General of Punjab to appear in person.

During proceedings, the Judicial Water Commission’s Syed Kamal Haider informed the court that the commission will be consulted before any tree-cutting decisions are made.

Justice Karim expressed displeasure over the late appearance of the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) counsel and called the attitude regrettable.

Punjab University reported forming a committee to act against those responsible for cutting 60 large trees at the Sheikh Zayed Centre.

The university said 500 trees have already been planted, with plans to plant 100,000 more. The court also instructed the university to establish a Miyawaki-style forest on campus.

The PHA’s counsel admitted that penalties for tree cutting are minimal and accused individuals are often released on bail. The court remarked that granting bail encourages the practice and asked the Advocate General to amend the law to include non-bailable provisions.

Justice Karim clarified that the action is not targeted at any institution but aims to protect trees for future generations.

The next hearing was scheduled for February 16, with a compliance report to be submitted.
