Pakistan has officially started classes for Animal Rights and the Law at the university level for the first time at Kinnaird Law School in 2026.
The course is being taught by Altamush Saeed, a leading legal advocate and animal rights activist, and the program is being offered through Environmental and Animal Rights Consultants Pakistan, the country’s first specialized Animal and Environmental Law firm.
This is a full-fledged semester course at the undergraduate level, complete with formal examinations. It introduces students to international animal rights law, examines gaps in Pakistan’s legal framework, and combines both theoretical knowledge and practical application.
The initiative aims to bring animal rights from courtrooms into classrooms. The course helps ensure that future generations of lawyers are trained to defend animal welfare as a matter of law and legal principle.
This development follows years of sustained legal advocacy led by Advocate Altamush Saeed, who currently serves as Chairman of the Animal Law Committee at the Lahore High Court Bar Association (2025–2026). In 2024, he established Pakistan’s first-ever Animal Law Committee, introducing structured legal discussion and advocacy for animal welfare within the judicial system.
Since then, his efforts have focused on strengthening legal protections, improving enforcement mechanisms, increasing accountability, and reshaping how animals are treated under Pakistani law.
