Punjab Introduces QR Code System for Flood Risk Management

In a first for the province, Punjab has introduced a QR code–based system to strengthen flood risk management by linking floodplain mapping with digital identification.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of Punjab, scanning a single QR code will provide complete data about flood-prone areas, enabling authorities to access real-time information and issue timely warnings.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said the system will support data-driven evacuation planning before floods, with information on children, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities already integrated into the database.

The system also incorporates satellite data and 20-year flood trends, while AI-based early warning features are expected to further improve disaster response.

Officials added that the technology will also ensure greater transparency in establishing relief camps and distributing aid, stressing that digital mapping has become essential in the era of climate change.
