The government is preparing a targeted export strategy to manage surplus potato production, aiming to support farmers facing low prices while expanding Pakistan’s presence in international markets.
The plan was discussed in a high level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, where officials reviewed the impact of excess supply on domestic prices and explored ways to boost exports.
Officials noted that increased cultivation and carryover stock from the previous season have created a surplus, putting pressure on farm gate prices. The minister stressed that farmers are the most affected and should be the primary focus of any support measures.
The meeting highlighted the need to improve export competitiveness, especially in Central Asia and other emerging markets. A time bound freight support mechanism is also under consideration to help exporters manage rising logistics costs.
The minister directed authorities to strengthen business links with key regions including Central Asia, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific markets to diversify export destinations.
He also called for better coordination between federal and provincial governments, particularly with Punjab, to develop a data driven strategy based on production, export, and logistics trends.
The government aims to adopt practical and market aligned measures that support both farmers and exporters while maintaining stability in the agricultural sector.
