The full Moon will align directly above the Holy Kaaba on Saturday night, according to reports in Arab media citing Saudi astronomy experts.
The alignment is expected to occur at 10:40 p.m. Saudi Standard Time, when the Moon will be positioned directly above the Kaaba. At that time, the Moon will be approximately 91 percent illuminated, while several other bright stars are also expected to be visible in the night sky.
Engineer Majed Abu Zahra, head of the Saudi Astronomical Society, said that when the Moon is directly above the Kaaba, people around the world, particularly in Arab countries, will be able to determine the direction of the Qibla by observing the Moon’s position.
Officials said the event can be observed with the naked eye and does not require telescopes or special equipment. However, visibility will be limited to a short period around the exact timing of the alignment.
Astronomers also noted that the Moon will be between 11.3 and 11.6 days old in its 29.5-day lunar cycle, placing it in a mid-phase that enhances visibility. They added that local weather conditions may affect how clearly the alignment can be seen.
Saudi astronomical authorities further stated that the event coincides with the expected sighting period of the Ramadan Moon, adding to its significance.
