WhatsApp Adds New Parental Restrictions For Underage Users

WhatsApp has introduced parent-managed accounts designed for pre-teens. The feature is rolling out globally and adds new parental controls that limit younger users to basic messaging and calling functions.

With this setup, parents create and manage the child’s account. They can control who is allowed to contact the account and decide which groups the user can join.

Parents can also review message requests from unknown contacts and adjust the account’s privacy settings.

All of these controls are protected by a parent PIN, which is required to manage the supervised account.

How the Setup Works

To create a parent-managed account, WhatsApp must first be installed on the child’s device. During account setup, parents need to open the “More options” menu and select the option to create a parent-managed account.

After that, the parent registers and verifies the child’s phone number, enters the child’s birthday, and confirms the age.

The final step requires scanning a QR code displayed on the child’s phone to link the account with the parent’s WhatsApp account. Parents then create a six-digit PIN that secures the parental controls.

As with many feature rollouts, availability may vary by region at first, and it could take some time before the feature becomes accessible to all users.
