WhatsApp’s New Feature Lets You Chat With People With No WhatsApp

WhatsApp is developing a feature called guest chats that allows users to message people who do not have a WhatsApp account. The feature was first spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.22.13 and is currently under development.

Guest chats enable conversations with non-users without requiring them to download a separate app. WhatsApp is testing guest chats with a limited number of Android and iOS beta users. Some testers have already started using the feature to communicate with contacts who are not on WhatsApp.

How Guest Chats Work

Users can create a guest chat invite link from the “Invite a friend” section or from the bottom of the contacts list. The link can be shared through SMS or copied and sent through email or other messaging apps.

Recipients can open the link on mobile or desktop. They can choose to download WhatsApp or continue as a guest, which opens the conversation in WhatsApp Web.

Guest chats use end-to-end encryption. When a guest joins, WhatsApp Web generates a unique identifier that creates the encryption key.

Only participants can read the messages. WhatsApp cannot access message content. Users can verify encryption through a QR code or security code. Guests also agree to WhatsApp’s Terms of Service and can see the inviter’s phone number.

Guests must enter a name after joining. It can be a nickname, but a recognizable name is recommended.

Guests are not verified by WhatsApp. If an invite link is accessed by someone else, they could join the chat. Users should verify the identity of participants before sharing sensitive information.

Guest Chat Interface

WhatsApp clearly labels guest participants. The word “Guest” appears in the top bar and inside the chat interface.

The WhatsApp user creates the invite link, but the guest initiates the conversation.

Feature Limitations

Guest chats offer limited features. They do not support group chats, media sharing, stickers, voice messages, photos, videos, documents, GIFs, or voice and video calls.

Guest chats expire after 10 days of inactivity. A new invite link must be created to continue the conversation.

Guests may not receive notifications for new messages, so they must check the chat manually.

Users can block guests the same way they block regular contacts. Open the chat, tap the guest name, and select “Block.” Once blocked, the guest cannot send messages.

Only guests who receive the invite link from the user can contact them.

Availability

Guest chats are currently available only to some users with the latest WhatsApp updates. The feature is still being tested, and WhatsApp has not announced a wider release date.
