The office of the Deputy Commissioner in Lahore has constituted a special enforcement committee to launch a strict crackdown on the sale of illegal cigarettes without tax stamps.
According to an official notification issued on March 18, 2026, the move follows government directives to address weak enforcement and curb the growing sale of untaxed tobacco products in the city.
The committee will be headed by the Assistant Commissioner concerned and includes representatives from the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority, the Excise Department, and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).
Under its mandate, the committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive survey and inspection of all retail outlets within three days. This will be followed by sustained enforcement operations over a period of three months.
Authorities have been directed to ensure strict checking of cigarette products for valid tax stamps and to identify violations. All illegal cigarettes found during inspections will be confiscated immediately, regardless of quantity.
In cases involving large-scale violations, officials have been empowered to seal shops or business premises for up to seven days in accordance with the law.
The notification also emphasizes coordination among district administration, excise officials, PERA, and FBR to ensure effective joint operations.
The convenor of the committee will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the directives and the timely submission of accurate reports.
