Telcos Allowed to Launch 5G Services Immediately as PTA Issues Licenses

Pakistan has taken a major step toward launching 5G services, as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued 5G licenses to the country’s three major telecom operators: Jazz, Zong, and Ufone.

The licensing ceremony was held at the Prime Minister’s House and was attended by Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shiza Fatima Khawaja, PTA Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman, chief executives of telecom companies, and members of the federal cabinet.

As part of the licensing process, all three telecom operators submitted bank guarantees to meet the conditions set for 5G licenses. PTA’s Director General Licensing, Aamir Shehzad, signed the licenses along with the telecom CEOs.

The ceremony was kept simple due to ongoing energy challenges and government austerity measures.

The PTA recently concluded the 5G spectrum auction, selling 480 MHz out of the total 597 MHz available. The auction generated approximately $510 million in revenue for the government.

During the event, Chairman Hafeez Ur Rehman briefed participants on the auction process and highlighted the regulatory framework that will guide the rollout of 5G services across urban centers.

Telecom operators are expected to begin 5G services in selected areas of major cities. Alongside the rollout, improvements to existing 4G services are also anticipated. Officials said the expansion will take place gradually, aiming to deliver faster internet speeds and improved connectivity for both individuals and businesses across Pakistan.

  • Forget about 5G for now as it will take some time to expand and get good coverage even in big cities.
For now enjoy fast 4G. Ufone and Jazz 4G speeds has already increased significantly.
