The National Highways and Motorway Police has enforced reduced speed limits on motorways and national highways across Pakistan as part of government efforts to conserve fuel and improve energy efficiency.
The decision was implemented following directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif amid rising global oil prices and energy concerns.
Revised Speed Limits on Motorways
Under the new regulations, speed limits on motorways have been lowered for different types of vehicles:
- Cars and light transport vehicles: 100 km/h (previously 120 km/h)
- Buses and heavy vehicles: 90 km/h (previously 110 km/h)
Changes on National Highways
Speed limits on national highways have also been reduced:
- Cars and light vehicles: 80 km/h (previously 100 km/h)
- Heavy and passenger vehicles: 65 km/h (previously 80 km/h)
The revised limits came into effect on March 26, 2026.
Awareness Campaign Launched
Authorities said a nationwide awareness campaign has been launched to inform motorists and ensure compliance with the new regulations.
Officials stated that the measure aims to reduce fuel consumption, enhance road safety, and support broader energy conservation efforts.
Lower Speeds Improve Fuel Efficiency
Energy experts say reducing vehicle speed can significantly improve fuel efficiency.
According to the International Energy Agency, lowering highway speeds by 10 km/h can reduce oil consumption from cars by up to 6 percent.
Measure Linked to Global Energy Pressures
The decision comes amid global oil supply disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions, prompting countries worldwide to introduce austerity measures to manage fuel consumption and energy use.

100km is a bit low for new vehicles which are fuel efficient even at 120
Should be implemented with true sprit of law.and permanently the same.
Bhai khota rehri le lo…
Bas avey?
Even 120 is slow
Good steps to minimize the losses on the road. Buses should also be 100 km instead of 80 km which will be hard on travellers. It must never be made a money making project through challans because on motorways nowhere in the world it is less than 120km. Challans should still be crossing 120km.
What about speed limit of Gulf Stream Aircraft 😉. Govt needs to focus on it’s running too specially not turning off its engines while not being used for 3/4 hrs 💋
