Govt Working on New Plan to Make Petrol Very Cheap for Bikers, Rickshaw Owners

The federal government has formally approached provincial governments for financial support to implement a massive Rs. 300 billion fuel subsidy program over the next 6 weeks, Finance Division sources informed ProPakistani.

Amid rising global fuel prices, the federal government has asked provinces to allocate Rs. 154 billion toward the proposed subsidy scheme to help shield motorcyclists and rickshaws from current burden of expensive fuel costs.

Sources said the government plans to introduce the subsidy specifically for two‑ and three‑wheeled vehicles at first.

Officials outlined two possible approaches under consideration:

• Option 1: Pass the full burden of rising international oil prices directly to consumers.
• Option 2: Provide subsidized fuel quotas of up to 20 litres for motorcycles and 30 litres for auto‑rickshaws.

The proposed targeted subsidy program would cost approximately Rs. 300 billion over six weeks, sources added.

A final decision on the scheme is expected after a high‑level meeting involving the President, Prime Minister, and Provincial Chief Ministers, likely scheduled for next week.

Meanwhile, government data indicates that the country’s fuel reserves are sufficient to meet domestic demand through May 10, 2026.
