Punjab Offers Free Legal Aid to Victims of Land Grabbing

The Punjab government has decided to provide free legal assistance to land grabbing victims in property-related cases across the province.

The Punjab Legal Aid (Amendment) Ordinance 2026 was presented in the Punjab Assembly, introducing changes to the Punjab Legal Aid Act 2018.

Under these amendments, individuals who file complaints under the Protection of Ownership Rights of Immovable Property Act 2025 will be entitled to a free lawyer.

Individuals who have been forcibly evicted from their property will also be provided a free lawyer in tribunal proceedings. Previously, this right was only available to victims involved in residential property disputes.

The ordinance further states that individuals who have been dispossessed or deprived of their property will be ensured legal assistance through the Legal Aid Agency.

Officials say the amendments aim to ensure equal access to justice for all, especially those affected by powerful land mafias.

The Governor of Punjab approved the ordinance on March 31, 2026. It has now been referred to the relevant committee, which will present its report within two months.

Following the committee’s report, the ordinance will be formally enacted into law after approval by the assembly.
