Punjab Expands Free Transport Service to 17 Districts

The Punjab government has decided to launch free public transport in 17 districts as part of its relief measures for commuters facing higher travel costs.

The decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, where officials also reviewed transport fares after recent fuel price changes. Pilot projects have been approved for Gujranwala, Multan, and Sialkot.

Authorities have also been directed to submit a report within 24 hours on per-kilometer transport fares as the government works out the framework for the wider rollout.

The latest move builds on an earlier relief package announced this month, under which Punjab made travel free on services such as the Orange Line, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Buses. That step was presented as a way to reduce the burden on the public amid rising fuel prices.

A similar measure was also announced in Islamabad, where public transport was made free for 30 days following the sharp increase in fuel rates.

With the new plan, the Punjab government appears to be expanding that relief model beyond major urban transit systems and into more districts across the province.
