E-Challans Issued to Hundreds of Smoke-Emitting Vehicles

Punjab has begun using its Safe Cities surveillance network to detect vehicles emitting excessive smoke and issue electronic fines through a newly established EPA monitoring desk.

Officials said enforcement during the current month has led to action against 211 vehicles, with penalties crossing Rs. 1 million for violations of emission standards. Lahore EPA Deputy Director Ali Ejaz said pollution remains present in summer, but its impact appears lower due to seasonal conditions.

He explained that winter conditions trap pollutants near the surface, making smog more visible, whereas stronger winds and rainfall in summer help disperse pollutants and reduce airborne dust, improving overall air quality readings.

He said key pollutants, including particulate matter, have shown a decline compared to last year.

The official added that the emission testing system, initially introduced as a pilot during winter, has now been regularized and expanded with support from the private sector. He also said the EPA is working alongside traffic police in joint operations to enforce emission standards and take action against violators.
