The federal government has approved a pilot project allowing the temporary import of used vehicles and auto parts under a new scheme aimed at repair, refurbishment, and subsequent re-export.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) today, which approved amendments to the Import Policy Order 2022 and related export facilitation rules.
According to the Commerce Division, the revised framework is aligned with international commitments and aims to regulate the controlled import of used vehicles and auto components for value-added processing.
Under the pilot arrangement, imported vehicles and parts will not be for open domestic sale but will be brought in for refurbishment and later exported. Authorities have been directed to review the scheme after one year to assess its impact and effectiveness.
Officials who attended the meeting said the move is designed to encourage industrial activity in the automotive sector while maintaining regulatory oversight over imports.
It is something allowing junk in, it stays in. No-one will allow junk exported out.
It’s illogical.. leaving local consumers at the mercy of local manufacturers who offer automobiles at exorbitant prices while bringing in imported cars and refurbishing them for export markets…
Why not offer same imported budget friendly option to local consumers with basic mandatory safety features.. why leave them at the mercy of local manufacturers..
Where does all the money go from the exports we earn? The poor man in Pakistan is still riddled with the high prices of vegetables fruits and meat from which there is no relief provided by the government of Pakistan!
Why would anybody invest million to set up a infrastructure structure n workshops so that after one year the govt decides it’s not feasible
This kind of advice hoc policies n U turns , like cng station , etc. Have destroyed people’s capital n initiative
Govt policies n guarantees should be careful examined weighed n then promulgated , not revised n the playing field changed every six months
Already in the name of budget policies r changed, this is not stability, in other countries policies R continued even after change of govt because the decision R not whimsical , they R based on facts , condition n needs
