Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed a task force to prepare Pakistan’s first national policy on waste-to-energy projects.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the task force will focus on promoting private sector participation and creating a clear strategy, institutional framework, and roadmap for advancing waste-to-energy initiatives across the country.
The proposed policy aims to facilitate local and foreign investment in the sector.
Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Leghari will serve as the convener of the task force. The body will also include Federal Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani, along with federal and provincial officials from climate change, energy, and local government departments.
Representatives from the private sector have also been included.
The government said the task force will study international best practices in waste-to-energy generation and identify legal, regulatory, financial, and operational challenges affecting the sector in Pakistan.
Under its terms of reference, the task force will recommend legislation and regulatory reforms to support waste-to-energy development, while also proposing measures to improve coordination among stakeholders and accelerate implementation of related projects nationwide.
