A police station has been set up inside the Federal Urdu University’s Science Campus in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, with the Aziz Bhatti police station being shifted to the site from its previous location.
According to sources, the transfer process is already underway and parts of the station’s investigation wing have already been moved to the university campus.
Preparations are also being made for the office of the station house officer, while several police offices have reportedly already started functioning from the new location.
The police station is being established behind the university’s BSc block, where space has been provided near the academic area. Sources said the university administration had granted permission for the relocation for an initial period of six months.
Police officials said more departments of the station had already been shifted and the SHO of Aziz Bhatti police station would also begin sitting at the university campus within the next few days. The new setup has reportedly already started receiving visitors and complainants.
However, the development has triggered concern within the university community. Sources from the university said police movement in and out of the campus had increased, and suspects were also being brought to and from the new station.
They said police vehicles were using the same entrance gate through which students and teachers access the examination department.
The relocation has reportedly caused unease among students, especially female students, who fear the presence of a police station inside the campus could affect the academic environment. Teachers have also expressed surprise over the move.
The matter has become more sensitive after the university registrar said he had only learned about the relocation recently and could not recall issuing any permission letter himself. He said the campus officer would be in a better position to explain the approval process and added that a police station should not be operating inside the university.
