Pakistan’s veteran cricketer Hasan Ali delivered with both bat and ball as Yorkshire beat Derbyshire by two wickets in a high-scoring Vitality Blast clash at Headingley.
Derbyshire posted a strong 194/4 after being asked to bat first, with Martin Andersson leading the charge with an unbeaten 81 off 56 balls. Matthew Montgomery made 35 off 23, while Ross Whiteley added a quick 39 off 17 to lift the total.
Hasan gave Yorkshire an early breakthrough by removing Derbyshire captain Aneurin Donald for 10. Andrew Tye, Matthew Revis and Jafer Chohan also chipped in with one wicket each.
Despite the big total, Yorkshire stayed in the contest through a late fightback after a shaky start to the chase. They were reduced to 65/4 in 7.4 overs, with Adam Lyth’s explosive 31 off 11 balls being the only major early contribution.
Jonny Bairstow, James Wharton and William Luxton all fell cheaply as Derbyshire looked to tighten their grip on the match.
Moeen Ali then revived Yorkshire’s innings with a 51-run knock off 35 deliveries, hitting two fours and five sixes. But the real turning point came at the death when Hasan Ali and Andrew Tye launched a brutal counterattack.
Hasan smashed 31 off just 12 balls, including two fours and three sixes, while Tye hammered 32 off 13 deliveries with four boundaries and two sixes. Their late hitting carried Yorkshire over the line with four balls to spare.
For Derbyshire, Jack Morley took 4/44, while Nick Potts claimed two wickets. Akif Javed and Montgomery picked up one each.
The win was Yorkshire’s second in a row in the ongoing Vitality Blast, with Hasan playing a key role in both.
