South African World Cup Star Found Dead in Home

South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, only weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Adams played in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches. The team later reached the knockout phase before losing to co-hosts Canada in the round of 32.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the news in a statement.

He described Adams as one of the country’s brightest young footballers and said South Africa was mourning alongside his family, teammates and supporters.

Police Opens Investigation

South African police said they had launched an investigation after officers found the body of a 25-year-old man at a house in Schotschekloof, central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death.

McKenzie urged the media and public to avoid speculation. He also asked people to respect the privacy of Adams’ family and Mamelodi Sundowns during the difficult period.

He added that the relevant authorities would release official information when available.

Adams Played Despite Grandmother’s Death

Adams started South Africa’s 1-1 Group A draw against the Czech Republic despite learning only hours before kick-off that his grandmother had died.

The South African Football Players Union said it was devastated by his sudden death.

The union praised Adams for representing the country with pride, courage and distinction at the World Cup.

It described his death as a major loss for his family, teammates, clubs, the wider football community and South Africa.

Career With Stellenbosch and Mamelodi Sundowns

Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC.

He later joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.

During his time at Sundowns, he won both the domestic league title and the African Champions League.

Adams made his senior international debut for South Africa in 2022.

He was also part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos later selected him for the 2026 World Cup.

The team made history at the tournament by reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
