Xiaomi 17T Series is Finally Here and Comes with Big Upgrades Across the Board for a Bigger Price Tag

Xiaomi has launched the 17T and 17T Pro, with the T series also skipping the number 16 like the company’s flagship lineup. The new phones bring several upgrades over last year’s 15T and 15T Pro, including improved cameras, larger batteries, brighter OLED displays, and newer MediaTek chipsets.

Design and Display

The Xiaomi 17T now has a smaller 6.59-inch OLED display, compared with the 6.83-inch screen on the Xiaomi 15T and the new 17T Pro. The panel supports a 120Hz refresh rate, 1268p plus resolution, 12-bit color with 68 billion colors, and up to 3,500 nits of peak brightness. Brightness control is handled through 3,840Hz PWM and DC dimming. Xiaomi has also shown the display in action on TikTok.

The Xiaomi 17T is thicker than its predecessor at 8.2mm, compared with 7.5mm on the 15T. It is available in Black, Deep Blue, and Deep Violet.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro keeps the larger 6.83-inch display size. It also uses a 12-bit OLED panel, but with 1280p plus resolution, a faster 144Hz refresh rate, and up to 3,500 nits of peak brightness. The Pro model can also drop to 1 nit in ultra dim mode. Both phones use Gorilla Glass 7i for screen protection.

The 17T Pro is also slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor. It measures 8.3mm thick, up from 8.0mm, and weighs 9g more than the 15T Pro. The phone comes in Black, Blue, Violet, and Opal White.

Internals and Software

The Xiaomi 17T is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 chipset. It uses a big CPU core design with eight Cortex A725 cores and a Mali G720 MC8 GPU. The 4nm chip is paired with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM running at 9,600Mbps and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage.

Xiaomi says the Dimensity 8500 brings a 25 percent boost in peak GPU performance compared with the older Dimensity 8400. The phone also uses the Xiaomi 3D IceLoop System, which includes a vapor chamber for cooling.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro uses the MediaTek Dimensity 9500. This 3nm chip offers a larger upgrade over the 15T Pro, with Xiaomi claiming a 32 percent improvement in single-core CPU performance and a 33 percent faster GPU. It also comes with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM running at 9,600Mbps and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of UFS 4.1 storage.

Like the standard model, the Pro version also uses Xiaomi’s 3D IceLoop cooling system. Xiaomi did not offer a 16GB RAM variant for the 15T Pro either, so the missing 16GB option on the 17T Pro appears to be product segmentation rather than a wider RAM issue.

Both phones include stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, Hi-Res Audio, and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certification. Neither phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack. Both are dual-SIM phones, and some regions also get eSIM support. Both models also support Xiaomi Offline Communication and NFC.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro supports Wi Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 with Dual Bluetooth. The regular Xiaomi 17T supports Wi Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6.0, but without the dual connectivity option.

Cameras

The Xiaomi 17T gets a major telephoto upgrade. It now features a 50MP 5x periscope camera with a 115mm focal length, replacing the 50MP 2x 46mm telephoto camera used on the 15T. The new periscope camera can also deliver 10x optical grade zoom by using in-sensor zoom and can capture tele macro shots from just 30cm away.

The 17T also includes a 12MP ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view and 15mm focal length. On the front, it has a 32MP selfie camera with a 90-degree field of view and 21mm focal length.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro uses the same telephoto, ultra wide, and selfie cameras as the regular 17T. However, its main camera uses a larger 1/1.31 inch OmniVision Light Fusion 950 sensor, which is a newer version of the sensor used in the 15T Pro. It has 1.2µm pixels, compared with the 1.0µm pixels on the 1/1.55 inch Light Fusion 800 sensor used in the standard Xiaomi 17T.

Both main cameras have 50MP resolution and Leica Summilux lenses with a 1G plus 6P structure. Both also support optical image stabilization. Xiaomi has added a new 4K 60fps video mode with HDR10 plus and Log options. The phones also include new camera modes such as Stage mode for photos and videos, Leica Live Moment, and Leica Live Portrait.

Battery and Pricing

The Xiaomi 17T has a 6,500mAh battery, which is 1,000mAh larger than the battery in the 15T. That is an 18 percent increase. The phone supports 67W HyperCharge and 50W USB PPS wired charging. It also supports 22.5W reverse charging, allowing users to share battery power with other devices.

The Xiaomi 17T Pro uses a silicon-carbon battery with 16 percent silicon content and a 7,000mAh capacity. That is 1,500mAh larger than the 15T Pro battery, representing a 27 percent increase. Charging support includes 100W HyperCharge, 100W USB PPS, and 50W wireless charging.

The Xiaomi 17T starts at $872 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage model. The Xiaomi 17T Pro starts at $1047 for the same 12GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration.

For comparison, the Xiaomi 15T and 15T Pro launched at $756 and $931, respectively, meaning both new models are $116 more expensive than their predecessors.

To offset the higher prices, Xiaomi is offering a 3-month Google AI Pro trial with 5TB of cloud storage, 3 months of YouTube Premium with YouTube Music, and a 4-month Spotify Premium trial.
