The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has decided to introduce a signal-free corridor system for Rescue 1122 ambulances and other emergency vehicles to help reduce response times during emergencies.
Under the plan, Rescue 1122 vehicle data will be linked with the Safe Cities network. Officials said traffic signals will automatically switch to green when an ambulance or emergency vehicle approaches an intersection, allowing it to move without delays.
According to the PSCA, AI-powered cameras installed across the city will identify the number plates of emergency vehicles from up to 400 meters away. The system will then coordinate traffic management and clear the route ahead of the vehicle.
Officials said traffic congestion often slows ambulances transporting patients and injured persons to hospitals, affecting the timely delivery of emergency medical assistance. The new technology aims to ensure faster access to healthcare facilities and emergency sites.
The authority has also developed a dedicated application for the project. A test run of the system is scheduled for this week, while full implementation is expected to begin after the integration of PSCA and Rescue 1122 data is completed later this month.
