Two people, including an employee of a fishing contractor, have been booked for allegedly poaching flamingos at Rawal Lake, Islamabad.
The case was registered on the complaint of Deputy Director Fisheries ICT Ghufran Shahzad, who accused the suspects and several unidentified individuals of illegally hunting and killing flamingos resting at the lake.
According to the first information report (FIR), the hunting of flamingos violates the Islamabad Nature Conservation and Wildlife Management Act 2024 and the Fisheries Ordinance 1961.
An official of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) said authorities also have evidence that poachers killed other water birds, including coots and moorhens.
The official described the incident as an ecological tragedy, noting that sightings of flamingos at Rawal Lake are rare during this time of year. Police said an investigation is underway following the registration of the case.
The complainant nominated two suspects, including a resident of Bani Gala and an employee of the fishing contractor. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to arrest the nominated suspects and identify other individuals involved in the hunting of the birds.
