Most and Least Literate Provinces of Pakistan Revealed

Punjab recorded the highest literacy rate in Pakistan at 68%, according to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26 released on Thursday, 11 June 2026.

The survey provided a province-wise and region-wise breakdown of literacy rates based on the 2025 Population and Housing Census.

Punjab is followed by Sindh and KPK with 58.0% each, while Balochistan recorded the lowest literacy rate at 49.0%.

The figures show that education outcomes remain uneven across Pakistan. They also highlight the need for region-specific education policies.

Balochistan’s lower literacy rate points to long-standing challenges. These include distance from schools, weak infrastructure, poverty, and a shortage of teachers in remote areas.

The survey was released one day before the Budget 2026-27. As a result, education spending and provincial learning gaps may receive fresh attention in policy discussions.
