The federal government has allocated major funds for transport and communication projects in the 2026-27 development programme, including key road, motorway and railway schemes.
According to the budget speech, Rs365 billion has been earmarked for transport and communication projects in the federal development programme.
The government has allocated Rs100bn for the N-25 Karachi-Quetta-Chaman highway, which it described as an important project for improving connectivity with Balochistan.
A separate allocation of Rs30bn has been made for the M-6 Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway, which is expected to receive financing support from the Asian Development Bank.
The government has also allocated Rs25bn for work on the Karachi-Rohri section of ML-1. The project is expected to begin in the next financial year.
In addition, Rs2bn has been set aside for the Thar Coal Connectivity Project, which will link local coal reserves with the national transport system.
The budget speech said more than Rs93bn has also been allocated for transport infrastructure projects in the provinces to improve access across the country.
