The Punjab government has announced the withdrawal of free public transport services across the province, with the decision taking effect from Saturday, June 13, 2026.
Under the new directive, commuters will once again be required to pay fares for travel on the Orange Line Metro Train, Lahore Metrobus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electric Bus services.
The free transport initiative was introduced as part of a broader relief package aimed at reducing the financial burden on citizens amid rising fuel prices and global economic uncertainty linked to regional tensions involving Iran. Although initially announced for one month, the facility was later extended.
With the latest decision, the previous fare structure for all four transport services will be restored from June 13.
According to official data, nearly 800,000 passengers benefited daily from the free travel scheme. Of these, approximately 290,000 commuters used the Orange Line Train each day, while more than 100,000 passengers travelled on the Metro Bus service free of charge.
The relief package had also included measures to support the agricultural sector. Farmers were provided a diesel subsidy of Rs 100 per liter per acre to help manage rising cultivation expenses.
In addition, registered motorcycle owners received a subsidy of Rs100 on up to 20 liters of fuel as part of the government’s efforts to provide financial relief to the public.
Officials said the restoration of fares marks the conclusion of the temporary transport subsidy program, while other public welfare initiatives will continue to be reviewed in line with economic conditions and government policy.
