The federal budget for 2026-27 has proposed a substantial increase in funding for public transport services in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with the subsidy for the Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus projects rising to Rs. 7.3 billion.
The allocation marks a significant increase from the Rs. 3 billion provided in the previous fiscal year. According to budget documents, the enhanced subsidy will support the operation of both the Metro Bus Service and the Green Electric Bus network in the twin cities.
Officials said the additional funding is expected to help improve affordable public transport facilities for commuters and support the expansion of services.
The Metro Bus Service connecting Rawalpindi and Islamabad has been operational since 2014 and serves a large number of passengers. The new fiscal year’s plan also includes the expansion of the Green Electric Bus network to 20 additional sectors and routes across the twin cities.
Public transport services are already operating on 23 routes in Rawalpindi Division, while Green Electric Buses are scheduled to be introduced on 20 more routes in phases under the proposed expansion plan.
