Insta360 has launched the Luna Ultra, its first dedicated pocket gimbal and a major shift for a company best known for 360-degree cameras.
The device has been co-engineered with Leica and is aimed at creators who want something between the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and a mirrorless camera setup.
The Luna Ultra costs $769.99, making it more expensive than any Osmo Pocket. However, it also offers features that DJI’s pocket camera does not.
The Luna Ultra comes with two Leica Summicron lenses. The main camera uses a 1-inch 8K primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and a 20mm equivalent focal length. The second camera uses a 1/1.3-inch telephoto sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and a 60mm equivalent focal length.
The telephoto camera supports up to 6x lossless zoom and 12x digital zoom.
Leica’s involvement is not limited to branding. Insta360 says the Luna Ultra uses Leica Summicron lenses on both cameras, which is the same optical designation Leica uses for its premium rangefinder lenses.
The camera also ships with three Leica color profiles: Natural, Vivid, and Chrome. These are calibrated looks based on Leica’s film and digital color science and are also available on Leica’s Q-series cameras.
Reviewers will test in the coming weeks whether this Leica tuning gives the Luna Ultra a clear advantage over other pocket cameras.
The Luna Ultra’s standout feature is its detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen.
Unlike the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, which has a fixed screen, the Luna Ultra’s display can detach and work as a wireless remote monitor and controller from up to 20 meters away at HD resolution.
This allows solo creators to place the camera on a tripod or at a low angle and still frame shots from across a room.
The screen supports both portrait and landscape orientations. It also works as the main control interface when attached to the camera.
The Luna Ultra can record 8K video at 30fps and 4K video at 120fps.
It also supports Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log, giving creators a professional video toolkit in a pocketable device.
For stabilization, the camera uses 3-axis mechanical stabilization with Deep Track 5.0.
The tracking system includes Subject Tracking, Auto Tracking, Group Tracking, and Smart Framing.
The Luna Ultra weighs 235g in Stellar White, making it heavier than the DJI Osmo Pocket 4.
It has a 1,550mAh battery that claims up to four hours of use. The device also includes 47GB of built-in storage and supports microSD cards of up to 1TB.
For audio, Insta360 has added a four-microphone array and a built-in wind guard for outdoor recording.
The camera supports magnetic filters and lens mounts. Insta360 also offers accessories, including a wide-angle lens that expands the field of view to 108 degrees. Wi-Fi 6 handles connectivity on the main unit.
The Insta360 Luna Ultra is available now for $769.99.
It comes in Cosmic Black and Stellar White and is being sold through the Insta360 Store.
