Punjab Revises Eligibility Criteria for Medical University Vice Chancellors

The Punjab government has changed the eligibility criteria for the appointment of vice chancellors at public medical universities, introducing new conditions related to age, teaching experience and academic qualifications.

Under the revised criteria, doctors who passed their MBBS degree in the second division will also be eligible to apply for vice chancellor positions.

The development comes at a time when admissions to public medical universities generally require students to secure merit above 90 percent. This contrast has led to debate in different circles over the proposed rules.

According to the new requirements, applicants must have served as a professor for at least 10 years. Candidates must also hold a postgraduate qualification or a PhD and have at least 20 research publications.

The revised rules also raise the upper age limit for vice chancellors to 70 years.

However, according to the documents, despite fixing the maximum age limit at 70 years, the new criteria do not prescribe any clear condition regarding medical, physical, or mental fitness for candidates seeking appointment to the post.
