The Mehran University Teachers Association (MUTA) has criticized the federal budget 2026-27, saying it fails to address the financial requirements of higher education institutions across the country.
In a statement issued on Monday, MUTA President Dr Nafees Ahmed Memon and General Secretary Dr Arshad Memon warned that the association could launch a protest campaign if its demands are not reflected in the budget.
The association called on the government to increase the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) recurring grant allocation from the proposed Rs66.4 billion to Rs130 billion. It noted that the HEC had originally sought a grant of Rs138 billion and later reduced its demand to at least Rs100 billion.
MUTA also urged the government to raise education spending to 4% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) over the next five years. The association pointed out that several South Asian countries allocate a larger share of their economies to education.
Among its other demands, MUTA sought the restoration of the 75% tax rebate for university teachers and researchers, notification of salary revisions under the Tenure Track System (TTS), and implementation of a uniform promotion policy for employees working under the Basic Pay Scale (BPS) system.
