The University of the Punjab has introduced a policy restricting PhD research on living eminent personalities, according to a notification issued by the university’s Deputy Registrar (Academic).
The decision was approved by the Advanced Studies and Research Board (ASRB) during its meeting held on May 11, 2026.
Under the policy, no PhD research on living eminent personalities will be conducted by scholars of the University of the Punjab in the future. However, the restriction will not apply to personalities who have been conferred or bestowed with a civil award by the government.
The notification further states that a PhD student seeking to conduct research on a living personality who has received a civil award must obtain prior permission from the ASRB through the relevant DDPC before proceeding with such research or synopsis writing.
The directive has been circulated to all deans of faculties and heads of teaching departments for compliance.
Copies of the notification have also been sent to the Chairperson of the Punjab University Quality Control Cell, the Director of the Quality Enhancement Cell, the Controller of Examinations, and the offices of the Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Registrar.
