Former Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), Waqar-ud-Din Syed, is facing a government inquiry over allegations of corruption, misuse of authority, and a significant rise in declared assets increasing by 753 percent during his service period, sources privy to the case told ProPakistani.
According to an official statement issued by the Establishment Division, Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered action following allegations supported by eye witness statements and recorded confessions from subordinate officers.
The charges include alleged receipt of illegal gratification from subordinates in exchange for postings and official favors, providing protection to illegal call centres in return for bribes, and misuse of authority in key operational appointments.
The statement further alleges poor governance during his tenure, which reportedly damaged the agency’s public reputation.
The charge sheet also raises concerns over a significant increase in the officer’s declared assets, which rose from Rs. 2.460 million in 2002 to Rs. 20.992 million in 2018, requiring justification in line with declared income sources.
The government has appointed Grade-21 officer Salman Chaudhry as the inquiry officer to conduct formal proceedings under the Civil Servants (Efficiency & Discipline) Rules, 2020.
Meanwhile, Waqar-ud-Din Syed has approached the Islamabad High Court, challenging the departmental inquiry on technical grounds and seeking to halt the proceedings.
