The iPhone Air may have sold poorly, but that is not stopping Apple from bringing it back for redemption with a camera upgrade.
Apple is reportedly working on a follow-up to the iPhone Air, the ultralight smartphone it introduced last fall. According to Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, the company may launch the second version of the device in spring 2027.
Sources said the new model could add a second rear camera, improved battery life, and a version of the A20 Pro processor.
The original iPhone Air came with a single rear camera. The lack of a second rear camera was seen as one of the device’s main trade-offs.
A second camera could make the next model more appealing while keeping the same ultralight form factor.
Apple rarely shares sales figures for individual iPhone models. However, the iPhone Air has not been seen as a strong seller among buyers.
The device has also been viewed as a precursor to Apple’s eventual foldable smartphone. Many Apple watchers did not expect the iPhone Air to remain a long-term part of the lineup.
The new report suggests Apple may have bigger plans for the ultralight iPhone design. It could make the iPhone Air form factor a more permanent part of the company’s mobile lineup.
If Apple reduces some of the tradeoffs of the slim design, the device could have a better chance with buyers.
A spring launch for the iPhone Air 2 would also show how Apple is changing its iPhone release schedule. The company previously announced all major smartphone models in the fall.
Over the past 12 months, Apple has focused on pricier iPhone models in September and moved the budget iPhone 17e announcement to the spring.
Apple has also abandoned several smaller iPhone efforts, including the iPhone mini and iPhone SE. The iPhone Air 2 could be Apple’s next attempt to offer a smaller and lighter option from a different angle.
