Apple reportedly still plans to unveil its first foldable iPhone in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, despite a recent report claiming the device had been delayed.
The foldable phone is widely expected to launch under the iPhone Ultra name. Although Apple may announce it in September, the device may not become available at the same time as the two iPhone 18 Pro models.
Delay Claims Disputed
A supply chain report published last week claimed that the iPhone Ultra had been delayed. A leaker on Weibo quickly disputed that claim, while a new report citing two supply chain sources also indicates that the launch remains on schedule.
An unnamed source at an Apple supplier said the iPhone Ultra would be unveiled in September with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. A second supply chain source said it had received no indication of a delay.
However, the reports may refer to different stages of the launch. Apple could announce the foldable iPhone alongside its other flagship models, but begin sales several weeks later.
Apple has previously announced devices before making them available at a later date. The latest information, therefore, suggests that the iPhone Ultra remains on track for a 2026 release, whether it arrives in late September or later in the year.
Display Production Begins
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to use OLED panels supplied exclusively by Samsung Display.
A report published in April claimed that Apple had selected Samsung Display as the sole supplier of foldable OLED screens for the device.
According to a new report from the same source, Samsung Display has now received approval to begin panel production after achieving a manufacturing yield of more than 80%.
The company’s production facility in Vietnam has reportedly started operations. Apple has also asked Samsung Display to manufacture an initial batch of 3 million OLED panels this year.
Newer OLED Materials
An earlier report claimed that Apple planned to use Samsung Display’s M14 display stack for the foldable iPhone. The latest report instead suggests that Apple has selected the newer M16 luminescent material.
The M16 stack is reported to provide higher brightness, improved color reproduction, better power efficiency, and a longer operating lifespan.
The OLED panels are also expected to use Color Filter on Encapsulation technology, also known as CoE.
