KP Hospital Equipment Worth Rs. 400 Million Allegedly Auctioned for Just Rs. 3.8 Million

An auction of assets at King Abdullah Teaching Hospital (KATH) has come under scrutiny after medical equipment, generators, air conditioners and other machinery worth hundreds of millions of rupees were reportedly sold for around Rs. 3.8 million.

The auction reportedly included more than 150 items, including five ultrasound machines, nine X-ray machines, two portable X-ray units, a C-arm imaging system, 11 ventilators, seven chemistry analyzers, three blood gas analyzers, 22 oxygen concentrators, six heavy-duty generators, 30 large air conditioners and several other medical devices.

The main concern is that some of the equipment was allegedly still functional but was declared condemned before being sold. Market estimates suggest that replacing the auctioned items could cost between Rs. 300 million and Rs. 400 million, or even more.

The gap between the estimated replacement cost and the reported auction proceeds has raised questions about the valuation, approval and disposal process.

Members of the hospital’s management committee said they had not been provided with the relevant records or details and were unable to comment on the procedure.
