OpenAI Launches Its Most Advanced AI But Available Only in US

OpenAI has unveiled its new GPT-5.6 family of artificial intelligence models, but access will initially be limited to a select group of US-based partners following a request from the US government.

The new lineup includes Sol, OpenAI’s flagship model, Terra, a mid-tier model designed for everyday tasks, and Luna, a faster, lower-cost option.

The company said Terra will cost half as much as GPT-5.5, aiming to attract more enterprise customers amid intensifying competition from Anthropic and Google.

OpenAI briefed US authorities on the models’ capabilities before launch and agreed to begin with a restricted preview involving trusted partners whose identities have been shared with the government.

Employees of those organizations based outside the United States will also be able to use the models.

The limited rollout comes just weeks after the US government directed Anthropic to block foreign nationals from accessing its latest Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models, citing national security concerns.

Both Anthropic’s newest models and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 reportedly demonstrate a significant ability to identify software vulnerabilities.
