Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, has achieved a major milestone after its newly developed wheat variety, QUAID-2026, received official approval for cultivation.
Developed by Dr. Awais Rasheed and Dr. Tariq Mahmood from the Department of Plant Sciences, QUAID-2026 is a high-yielding, cold-tolerant, and disease-resistant wheat variety.
It also offers enhanced zinc content and excellent chapati-making quality, making it a nutritious option for consumers while improving productivity for farmers.
The variety was approved during the 47th Provincial Seed Council (PSC) meeting, chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Agriculture Mian Muhammad Umar and co-chaired by Secretary Agriculture Dr. Muhammad Bakhtiar.
The approval marks a significant achievement for QAU’s agricultural research programme and highlights the university’s contribution to Pakistan’s food security and agricultural innovation.
Experts expect QUAID-2026 to increase wheat yields, strengthen crop resilience, and support sustainable farming in wheat-growing regions across the country.
