Pioneering Excellence: University of Lahore Becomes First in Punjab to Introduce PhD in Nursing Program

The University of Lahore (UOL) has achieved a landmark in Pakistan’s higher education sector with the launch of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing through its Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Lahore School of Nursing (LSN). UOL is now the first university in Punjab to offer a PhD in Nursing, marking a major advancement in nursing education and professional leadership.

The doctoral programme reflects the University’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and healthcare education. By extending nursing education to the highest academic tier, UOL has created an opportunity for nursing professionals across Pakistan to pursue doctoral scholarship in their own discipline, strengthening the country’s capacity for research, innovation, and evidence-based healthcare.

The PhD in Nursing aims to cultivate nurse scientists, academic leaders, healthcare policymakers, and clinical researchers equipped to address evolving challenges in healthcare systems. The programme is expected to contribute to indigenous research, enhanced nursing practice, and informed health policy. From the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Post RN at undergraduate level, to the Master of Science (MSN), and now the PhD at doctoral level, all LSN programmes are accredited by the Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PN&MC) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

LSN has steadily expanded its academic portfolio to meet the healthcare sector’s growing needs. With the PhD, the school now offers a complete pathway spanning undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral education, reinforcing its position among the country’s leading nursing institutions.

Supported by the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, doctoral scholars will benefit from a rigorous academic environment, advanced laboratories, multidisciplinary collaboration, clinical training at UOL-affiliated teaching hospitals, and an expanding network of academic partnerships fostering high-impact research and leadership in academia, clinical practice, and public policy.
