NADRA Denies Alleged Data Leak of CNICs, Biometrics, and More

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has rejected claims circulating on social media that its systems were breached and sensitive citizen information is being sold on the dark web.

According to NADRA’s response, the allegations are false and unfounded. The claims suggested that citizen data, including CNIC numbers, photographs, and biometric information, had been leaked on the dark web.

NADRA pointed out that the social media post making the allegations itself acknowledged that the claim was unsubstantiated.

Previous Investigation

According to NADRA, similar claims also surfaced in 2024.

On both occasions, the authority conducted an investigation in coordination with the National Computer Emergency Response Team (NCERT) and the National Telecommunications and Information Security Board (NTISB).

The investigations found no evidence of any breach of NADRA’s systems or any unauthorized access to citizen data.

Sample Images Were Fake

NADRA also addressed images being circulated alongside the claims.

It said the sample images are inconsistent with the format used by the authority to capture and store citizen data. The authority added that the same images have appeared multiple times on different platforms in the past.

No Citizen Data Compromised

Responding to questions surrounding the alleged incident, NADRA said there is no evidence that any breach of its systems occurred.

The authority also stated that no citizen data was stolen or compromised.

As a result, NADRA said there is no security incident requiring remediation.

Monitoring Continues

Although it has rejected the allegations, NADRA said it will continue monitoring such claims in coordination with the relevant national cybersecurity agencies.
