June 2026 was the second-hottest June on record in the UK and Wales since 1884, as an intense heatwave continued to push temperatures well above normal across parts of Europe.
Like several other European countries, the UK has also been dealing with severe heat in recent weeks, with unusually high daytime and nighttime temperatures leaving people struggling to cope.
According to data from the UK Met Office, June 2026 ranked among the hottest months in the country’s recorded history. In both the UK and Wales, it was the second-warmest June since records began in 1884.
Weather officials said average temperatures during 2026 have remained above normal so far, pointing to a broader warming trend.
British media reported that new nighttime temperature records were also set during June in the UK, Wales, and Scotland, showing that the heat was not limited to the daytime and remained unusually intense after sunset as well.
The highest temperature mentioned in the latest spell was recorded in Charlwood, Surrey, at 35.7°C. That figure narrowly surpassed the previous June benchmark of 35.6°C, which had been recorded in 1976.
The latest figures add to growing concern over rising temperatures across Europe, where repeated heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense.
