OnePlus, Oppo, and Realme could soon take another major step toward closer integration with OxygenOS and Realme UI merging into Oppo’s ColorOS.
The move follows a decision announced in 2021, when OnePlus co-founder Pete Lau revealed that OxygenOS and ColorOS would merge, ending OnePlus’s separate software development from Oppo. The latest claim suggests the company is now planning to bring Realme UI to the same platform as well.
If the insider report is accurate, all three brands would use ColorOS as their common software platform. The change is expected to help reduce research and development costs and is said to be part of a broader consolidation.
Realme Could Exit China
According to the same report, Realme is expected to leave the Chinese market and instead focus on overseas markets.
Previous reports have suggested that OnePlus and Realme are moving toward a merger. However, the insider says India is expected to be the only market where both brands continue to operate alongside each other. In other regions, the distinction between the two companies may become largely irrelevant.
OnePlus to Focus on India and China Only
The insider also claims that OnePlus will concentrate exclusively on the Indian and Chinese markets.
Recent developments appear to support this claim. OnePlus Germany has been directing customers toward Oppo devices, while nearly every product listed on the OnePlus UK website is currently out of stock.
The report further states that OnePlus will become even more closely integrated with Oppo in its remaining markets. In India, for example, after-sales support for OnePlus customers is already being handled by Oppo.
US Strategy Remains Unclear
The report does not clarify what these changes could mean for the US smartphone market, where consumers have relatively limited choices outside of Apple, Samsung, and Motorola.
It remains unclear whether Oppo plans to exit the US market entirely or attempt to establish the Oppo brand there. Oppo has little brand recognition in the US today, although it was previously known for its DVD and Blu-ray players.
At the same time, OnePlus has also struggled to gain a significant foothold in the country, with its market share reportedly never exceeding 1%.
