Meccha Chameleon has sold more than 15 million copies in less than a month after its release, making it one of the year’s biggest independent gaming successes.
Developer Lemorion_1224 confirmed the milestone in a Steam community post and thanked players for their support. The game launched on Steam on June 9, 2026, and currently costs $3.99 in Pakistan.
The developer also announced that Meccha Chameleon will collaborate with a famous Japanese star next week. However, the identity of the person or character involved remains unknown.
PC Gamer suggested Hatsune Miku as one possibility, although the developer has not confirmed this. The Vocaloid character has previously appeared in collaborations involving Fortnite, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Magic: The Gathering.
Two Japanese developers, Lemorion and Haganeiro, created Meccha Chameleon in around two months.
PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon estimated that the game’s sales worked out to roughly $1 million for every day spent developing it. The calculation was based on its sales, price, and unusually short production period.
The developers reportedly completed a basic version of the game first and then continued improving it. They also reused assets from earlier projects, helping them finish development more quickly.
PC Gamer reviewer Lincoln Carpenter gave Meccha Chameleon a score of 82%.
He praised its competitive camouflage system and described the process of creating disguises as highly satisfying, particularly for players who enjoy misleading their opponents.
The review also criticised the game’s rough interface, matchmaking limitations, and other technical problems. However, PC Gamer still considered its multiplayer concept strong enough to overcome many of those issues.
The game was created by only two people and costs around $6, making its technical shortcomings easier to overlook.
Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier recently compared making an independent game to buying a lottery ticket, as developers can spend years on a project without knowing whether it will succeed.
Meccha Chameleon appears to have beaten those odds. Its success shows that large budgets and lengthy development periods cannot guarantee the level of popularity that can come from launching the right game at the right time.
However, timing was not the only factor. Strong reviews, an accessible price, and a multiplayer concept designed around entertaining interactions between friends also helped the game reach 15 million sales.
