Google Images Getting Pinterest-Like Redesign for Its 25th Birthday

Google is updating Google Images to mark 25 years since the service launched in July 2001.

The redesigned experience introduces a more browsable image homepage, real-time personalized results, and AI image generation directly inside Search. Google says the changes are meant to help users both discover images from the web and create visuals when the exact image they want does not already exist.

Personalized Image Gallery

The new Google Images homepage will show a dynamic gallery of images from across the web.

Google says the gallery will be updated in real time and tailored to the user’s interests. Instead of starting from a mostly blank page, users will see visual suggestions before they search.

The updated Images homepage will roll out over the coming weeks on desktop in the US and in English. Users will need to sign in to a Google account to try the new experience.

Collections Get Easier to Use

Google is also improving saved image collections.

Users can still save images by opening a photo, selecting the menu above it, and adding it to a collection. Once saved, those collections will appear as tabs above the main image gallery, making it easier to return to a topic and continue exploring similar results.

The Saved page will also show separate tabs for collections and all image results, allowing users to switch between both views more quickly.

AI Image Creation in Search

Google is adding image generation directly to AI Overviews in Search.

The feature uses Google’s Nano Banana model to create images from text prompts without requiring users to leave the search page. Google says this is meant for cases where a user has a specific visual idea but cannot find an existing image that matches it.

Image generation in AI Overviews will begin rolling out in the coming weeks in English. It will be available in regions that already support image creation in AI Mode.

Inspired by Jennifer Lopez’s Versace Dress

Google also used the announcement to revisit the origin of Google Images.

Jennifer Lopez’s green Versace dress at the 2000 Grammy Awards became one of Google’s most popular searches at the time. Google said people did not only want to read about the dress; they wanted to see it. That demand helped push the company to launch Google Images in July 2001.

25 Years of Visual Search

Since launching Images, Google has added several major visual search tools.

These include Similar Images in 2009, Search by Image in 2011, Google Lens in Search in 2018, Multisearch in Lens in 2022, Circle to Search in 2024, and Lens with AI Mode in 2025.

The latest update continues that shift from simple image search toward a more personalized and AI-assisted visual discovery experience.
