The federal government is expected to lift the ban on new domestic LNG connections by September if gas supplies improve in the coming weeks.
According to official sources, the restriction may be withdrawn after Qatar’s force majeure on LNG supplies ends in August. This is expected to improve LNG availability in Pakistan from September.
Officials said the demand for LNG from the power sector is also likely to go down during the same period, which could reduce pressure on the national gas network.
However, they added that the final decision will only be made after a full review of the gas supply situation in September.
The government had suspended new domestic LNG connections in May due to supply shortages. The Petroleum Ministry issued a formal notification in this regard, after which Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited stopped issuing new demand notices.
The suspension applies to all new domestic LNG connections, including applications submitted under both urgent and regular fee categories.
Qatar had earlier declared force majeure on LNG supplies until August, which affected Pakistan’s LNG availability and led to the temporary ban on new domestic connections.
