The Pakistan Nursing and Midwifery Council (PNMC) has reinstated white uniforms for all nurses, replacing the deep navy attire introduced in January 2024.
The council’s directive, issued in an official circular, makes white uniforms mandatory for both female and male nursing staff across the country.
Under the new rules, female nurses must wear a white shalwar kameez, a white coat, a white dupatta and black shoes; during winter, they may use a black jersey or coat.
Male nurses are required to wear a white shirt, white trousers and black shoes, with the option of a black jersey or coat in colder months.
The PNMC clarified that intensive care units and operating theatres will follow the uniform policy designated by individual hospital administrations.
The council said the move restores a traditional professional appearance and aims to ensure uniformity and public recognition of nursing staff.
The white uniform requirement takes effect immediately.
