U.S. Closes Consulate General in Major Pakistani City

The U.S. Consulate General in Peshawar has officially closed, with responsibility for diplomatic engagement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa transferred to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Unit (KPU) at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad.

In a public announcement, the U.S. mission said the Consulate General’s Peshawar page is no longer active and advised people to follow the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan’s official website and social media accounts for future updates.

The closure follows a decision announced by the U.S. State Department in May, when it said the United States would shut its consulate in Peshawar, citing the safety of its diplomatic personnel.

At the time, the State Department said the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad would assume responsibility for all diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding that the decision reflected its commitment to the safety of its diplomats and efficient resource management.

The embassy said the KPU will continue handling U.S. diplomatic engagement in the province from Islamabad.
