The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for several upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) due to heavy rainfall forecast from July 19 to July 25.
According to the authority, widespread and persistent rain is expected across the northern parts of the province, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas and communities located near rivers and streams.
The PDMA warned that continued rainfall could speed up glacier melting and raise the chances of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods, which can cause sudden and powerful flooding in downstream areas.
The alert has been issued for Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Bahrain, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra.
District administrations in the affected areas have been directed to remain on high alert throughout the forecast period and activate emergency response plans.
The authority has also instructed officials to set up evacuation centers in vulnerable areas. In case of an emergency, residents have been advised to contact the PDMA helpline at 1700.
