China to Help Pakistan Build Modern Grain Storage System

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed a proposal by Chinese agricultural technology company FAMSUN to modernize Pakistan’s grain storage infrastructure, saying the partnership will help strengthen food security and introduce advanced technologies into the country’s agriculture sector.

During a meeting with a delegation led by FAMSUN Chief Executive Officer Jack Chen, the prime minister said cooperation between Pakistan and Chinese companies would play an important role in modernizing grain storage systems while creating opportunities for technology transfer and workforce training.

Sharif said Pakistan and China share a long-standing strategic partnership and that greater business-to-business collaboration would further deepen economic ties between the two countries. He stressed that projects involving foreign companies should also focus on developing local expertise by training Pakistani workers.

FAMSUN proposed converting Pakistan’s existing grain storage facilities into modern silo systems equipped with advanced storage technology. According to a briefing presented during the meeting, the company also plans to establish a demonstration center in Pakistan to showcase environmentally friendly “green silo” technology and support the development of modern grain storage infrastructure.

The initiative is expected to help reduce post-harvest losses, improve grain preservation, and strengthen Pakistan’s food security. Pakistan loses a significant share of its wheat and other stored crops each year due to outdated storage facilities, pest infestations, moisture, and poor handling, making modern silos an important component of agricultural modernization.

Jack Chen said FAMSUN is committed to supporting Pakistan through modern storage solutions, technology transfer, and training programs. He noted that discussions on the project gained momentum following his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the premier’s recent visit to China.

The meeting was informed that FAMSUN and the Green Pakistan Initiative have already signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in agriculture and food security.

The meeting was attended by National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Kayani, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries Haroon Akhtar, and senior government officials.

FAMSUN is one of China’s leading providers of agricultural engineering, grain storage, animal feed, and food processing solutions, with operations in multiple countries. Its entry into Pakistan comes as Islamabad seeks greater Chinese investment in agriculture, mechanization, food processing, and post-harvest infrastructure to improve productivity and reduce food losses.
