US FDA Issues Recall for Thyroid Drug

Major Pharmaceuticals has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of select levothyroxine sodium tablet lots after tests showed some batches were subpotent.

The recall, which began on July 13, covers multiple dosage strengths of the thyroid medicine, including 25 mcg, 50 mcg, 75 mcg, 88 mcg, 112 mcg, 125 mcg and 150 mcg tablets.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classified the action as a Class II recall, meaning the products may cause temporary or medically reversible health effects.

Levothyroxine is used to treat hypothyroidism and other thyroid-related conditions. If the tablets contain less active ingredient than required, patients may face a return or worsening of symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivity, and difficulty concentrating.

Health experts advise patients not to stop taking the medicine suddenly. Instead, they should check the lot number on their packaging and contact a doctor or pharmacist if their supply matches the recalled batches.

Major Pharmaceuticals said patients should return affected products to the place of purchase.
