Karachi Starts Installing Safety Nets Under Manhole Covers

The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) has launched a pilot project to install protective safety nets beneath manhole covers across the city.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui announced the initiative as a safety and precautionary measure. The project has started on Tariq Road.

The safety nets will provide an additional protective layer inside manholes. They are designed to reduce the risk of people falling into open manholes when covers are missing, damaged or displaced.

According to Wahab, authorities tested the nets to withstand a weight of up to 180 kilograms.

KWSC will review the pilot project before expanding it to other parts of Karachi. The corporation plans to install the nets across the city in different phases.

The initiative comes as concerns continue to grow over uncovered and damaged manholes in Karachi. The phased installation is expected to strengthen public safety while authorities address problems involving missing covers.
