Fans of historical movies and especially royal enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that a new royal biopic – Spencer is in process.
On Wednesday, it was revealed that director Pablo Larraín is making a biopic of Princess Diana and he has cast Kristen Stewart for the role. The film’s title has been inspired by Diana’s maiden name – Spencer.
Here Are The Details
The entire plot of the movie occurs over the course of three days and at one location. It also happens at the House of Windsor’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Spencer will document the events that led Diana to divorce Prince Charles and flee the Royal family.
This movie is what Larrain describes as ‘a fairy tale turned upside down’ and a quest for identity at the same time.
“We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the queen. She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realizes that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles.”
The movie, however, will not include the accident, which took her life in 1997. Peaky Blinders famed writer, Steven Knight is the man behind the script.
Spencer is expected to begin filming in 2021 and release in 2022.
The Public Reaction
Pablo Larraín is best known for his film Jackie, which was a biopic of the first lady Jackie Kennedy and earned Natalie Portman an Oscar nomination in 2017.
Lauding Kristen’s acting chops, he said,
“Kristen is one of the great actors around today… [She] can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her.”
While fans are excited about this new movie, they were a bit shocked by the casting choice. It was indeed a piece of royal casting news that nobody saw coming.

Some are even complaining that she doesn’t strike a resemblance with the late Princess and is thus a bad choice for Spencer.
Actresses Who Could Have Been A Good Pick For Spencer
Looking back at the 2013 biopic film Diana, Naomi Watts did a really good job of evoking the public sentiments, but it didn’t quite well impress the critics.
Another high-profile portrayal of Princess Diana is yet to appear in the Season 4 of The Crown by Emma Corrins.
Will Spencer be able to appease the public or own the award shows? It is too soon to tell. But with the current reaction from netizens, we can at least say that it will be a movie worth watching.
And looking at all those comments against the casting of Kristen Stewart, we decided to come up with a shortlist of actresses that would have been a perfect fit for the role.
Speaking of which, Anne Hathaway immediately comes to mind. She is an exemplar of a true performer. She made a character like Mia Thermopolis memorable for us, even though it’s been 9 years to the release of The Princess Diaries.
Keira Knightley has also done countless roles in historical movies. Pride and Prejudice, Atonement, Colette, The Duchess are just a few examples of how well she can adapt to different eras. Her physical appearance would also fit well for the portrayal of Princess Diana.
English actress Lily James also has some really great movies to her name. Her performance in the latter seasons of Downton Abbey was remarkable and she could do full justice to the role in Spencer as well. And since she has a native accent, she could deliver the lines with accurate emotions more naturally.
